Menus

The Menu Collection is composed primarily of menus from the German Democratic Republic, the USSR, and other Warsaw Pact countries. Early in the Cold War period, printed menus typically were typewritten carbon copies with basic information, reflecting the function of restaurants, offering staples suited to the working-class society and drawing on meat and vegetables supplied from local production. With time, consumers began to demand more choice and experience, which is reflected in both the design and food offerings of the menus. Even within confined borders, some restaurants offered international cuisine and elevated dining experiences.
