Family Day at the Wende: DIY Znachki Pin Workshop

Family Day at the Wende returns this August with a DIY znachki pin-making activity. Znachki are pins that were mass-produced in the Soviet Union to commemorate a variety of subjects such as military anniversaries, state leaders, historical communist figures, cities, youth organizations, and sporting clubs. During the Cold War, znachki was initially targeted towards children and teens as a way to help create a sense of collective national identity, but, given their easy accessibility in a society with few consumer goods, they were wildly a popular collector’s item among Soviets of all ages.

This all-ages activity will be offered outdoors in the Wende Garden from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Family Day at the Wende is held on the last Sunday of every month, presenting an educational activity designed for children and adults alike. All materials are provided and attendance is free.
