Music at the Wende: San Julian Consort Presents “A Song on the End of the World”

Inspired by Polish writer and 1980 Nobel laureate Czeslaw Milosz’s poem, “A Song on the End of the World,” this concert reflects on silence, stillness, and night as a state of new understanding and transformation. The performers include Street Symphony’s founder and artistic director Vijay Gupta and cimbalom artist Chester Englander who will present works by György Kurtág and a piece by Kaija Saariaho dedicated to Polish avant-garde composer Witold Lutosławski.

About San Julian Consort
The San Julian Consort is the instrumental ensemble of Street Symphony, an organization dedicated to serving communities affected by homelessness and incarceration through musical performances, workshops, and dialogue. Street Symphony offers music as a pathway to human connection. Founded in 2011 by violinist Vijay Gupta, Street Symphony ensembles have presented over 1,000 musical engagements in Skid Row clinics and shelters, Los Angeles County Jails, and state prisons. Named for the patron saint of violinists and those who make shelters, San Julian Street–located in downtown Los Angeles–is the epicenter of the crisis of homelessness in America today. The performers of this program include Street Symphony’s founder and artistic director Vijay Gupta, and cimbalom artist Chester Englander.

Music at the Wende is a free concert series in which esteemed musical organizations present programs inspired by the Wende’s collection and mission. Launched in October 2018, Music at the Wende is thrilled to announce its third season, with concerts from December 2021 through June 2022.

All concerts are free. Concerts begin at 8 p.m. and are preceded by a museum tour and reception at 7 p.m. RSVPs open four weeks prior to each event at 10 a.m.

The concert series is generously supported by the Music at the Wende Donor Group.
