Samizdat Sundays

Join us for Samizdat Sundays—hands‑on textile workshops inspired by the spirit of creative resistance and DIY culture found in samizdat traditions. Each week offers a different project, connecting archival stories of subversion with contemporary making.

We encourage participants to bring an item each week—a T‑shirt, a pair of jeans, or any textile you’re ready to transform, repair, or experiment with.

Each session is free, open to all skill levels, and guided by artists who delight in subversion and play. Come for one or come for all—together we’ll stitch, alter, repair, and imagine new forms of expression.

SCHEDULE

“HAND” BOOK MADE OF CLOTH

March 8, 2026

Inspired by the beautiful “handbook” by artist Ruth Katzenstein Souza currently on view at Art Division in MacArthur Park, we will make a cloth “book” that is illustrated with embroidery, drawing, embellishments, collage, etc. Perhaps your “book” is a handkerchief that reveals its story when it is unfolded; or perhaps yours will be more of a scroll than a book, one that unfurls, or perhaps yours will unravel as it is read. Join us!

See images of Katzenstein Souza’s book on her website:

ACCORDION BOOK

March 15, 2026

Modeled after the pilgrimage temple and shrine stamp books of Japan (called goshuin), we will make simple accordion books that can be embellished on the outside and the inside with collage, writing, cloth, etc. Working with our abundant stash of discarded materials, we will make accordion books of various sizes and for various purposes. Will your accordion book be for recording a spiritual pilgrimage? Or perhaps to hold your favorite recipes, or your favorite poems? Perhaps your accordion book will be an unfolding love letter, to another person or the squirrel who lives in your favorite tree.

PATCHES!

March 22, 2026

We will begin our workshop with a visit to the Wende Museum archives to see the beautiful handmade patches in the Soviet Hippie collection. Using felt as our substrate, we will embroider, collage, embellish, and appliqué designs to make a patch to use to cover up a rip or tear, or perhaps to communicate an idea or concept.

For an extra special weekend, come to the museum on Saturday, March 21 as well to enjoy the Soviet Hippie Archives Open House. You’ll come away inspired, I’m certain of it!

FINISH IT! CLINIC

March 29, 2026

Today we will finish up projects we’re working on, whether they’re projects begun in Samizdat Sundays, or other projects that have been lingering in your studio or drawer waiting to be finished. All of our materials will be available to you, but you’re also invited to bring your own materials, if your project requires them. If this is your first time coming to the workshop, you are welcome to work on a past Samizdat Sunday project. Perhaps you’ll make a series of mail art collage postcards, or perhaps you’ll sew a secret pocket or message into your favorite shirt. Let’s finish (or begin!) things together in the beautiful classroom at the Wende.
