About the Wende

About the Wende Museum

The Wende is a museum, archive, and cultural center where art, history, and community come together.

Founded in 2002 and based in Culver City, California, the Wende is dedicated to rescuing, preserving, and activating at-risk historical collections, especially those connected to dissident movements, civil society, and human rights advocacy.

“Wende,” a German word meaning “turning point” or “transformation,” reflects the origins of the collection. It also points to the institution’s broader mission: to illuminate historical moments of change and bring them into contemporary conversation.

Our Origins

The Wende Museum was founded in response to the widespread loss of cultural materials following the political transformations of the late twentieth century. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many archives and personal collections were dispersed, damaged, or destroyed. Many were held outside official institutions.

Recognizing the urgency of this moment, the Wende built the capacity to stabilize fragile materials, safeguard endangered records, and preserve stories that might otherwise disappear. Early efforts focused on the cultural legacy of the Cold War and the Eastern Bloc, with particular attention to everyday life, artistic production, and political expression.

This work continues today. The museum documents nonconformist networks and resistance movements, including Solidarity in Poland and Jewish life and activism in the Soviet Union, such as the experiences of Refuseniks.

Collection & Research

Today, the Wende holds more than 100,000 artworks, objects, and archival materials, forming an unparalleled resource on Cold War-era cultural history and its global legacies.

The collection is distinguished not only by its scope, but by its focus: dissent, solidarity, migration, and cultural memory.

The Wende is committed to open access. Its holdings are available onsite and online to scholars, artists, students, journalists, and the public. The museum also connects its collections with contemporary creators and researchers, leading to exhibitions, publications, films, and new work.

Education & Community

The Wende provides educational programs and pathways for students, researchers, and community members, including school tours, art workshops, lectures, and internships. Through long-term partnerships and programs, the Museum prioritizes underrepresented communities in the arts, meeting people where they are and building paths into creative work and cultural careers.

A core example is the Professional Development Training program, which provides hands-on training for young people from Watts and South Los Angeles, connecting emerging talent to museum collections, creative mentors, and real-world experience working in a cultural institution.

Wellness & Belonging

The Wende treats wellness as part of cultural life. It creates spaces for reflection, creativity, and connection that support individual and collective well-being. Programs include mindfulness meditation, movement, nutrition, writing and art workshops, and intergenerational gatherings. All are free and open to the public, grounded in the belief that cultural institutions can serve as sites of care where history, art, and everyday life connect.

A Hub of Community and Culture

Over the past decade, through capital investments and sustained partnerships, the Wende has evolved into a cultural hub for a thriving community.

Its Culver City campus includes galleries, gardens, and the Glorya Kaufman Community Center, supporting year-round programs focused on art, public dialogue, and well-being. The Museum serves more than 30,000 visitors annually through free admission and no-barrier access to programs.

Looking Ahead

What began as a grassroots preservation effort has grown into a dynamic institution at the intersection of art, history, and civic life. The Wende continues to expand its collections and deepen its partnerships, bringing artists, scholars, and the public into active exchange, with the goal of becoming a hub for ideas and creative expression.
