Film Screening: Wende Flicks
This multi-day film series, organized in collaboration with DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, focuses on films made just as the Berlin Wall collapsed and East Germany began to crumble. It showcases thirteen feature films and five documentaries made by the last generation of filmmakers trained in the German Democratic Republic. Due to the rapidly changing social, legal, and political context in the early 1990s—and related rights and distribution issues—most of these films were never widely circulated and had never before been screened outside of Germany, until the Wende Museum and DEFA Film Library brought this body of work to the international public.
The Wende Flicks film screenings were launched at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in conjunction with its exhibition Art of Two Germanys/Cold War Cultures. Support was provided by the DEFA Library and Archive, University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
