Journalism, Democracy, and Authoritarianism: A Conversation with Ali Velshi

Join MSNBC Chief Correspondent Ali Velshi in conversation with Wende Museum Founder and Executive Director Justin Jampol, exploring the vital role of journalists in preserving democracy and fighting authoritarianism – drawing on Soviet history as well as current events in Russia. Velshi will highlight themes from his new memoir, Small Acts of Courage: A Legacy of Endurance and the Fight for Democracy, which chronicles his family’s 125-year journey through social justice and public service.

Velshi will share stories of his grandfather’s work with Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, showing how principles of pluralistic democracy and equality are woven into his family’s journey – from escaping apartheid to immigrating to Kenya, Canada, and the United States. Ali Velshi is an award-winning journalist, host of Velshi, Chief Correspondent for MSNBC, and a weekly economics contributor to NPR’s Here And Now. He has covered multiple American elections and significant news stories around the globe.

This special event is presented by the Wende Museum in partnership with the Ismaili Council of the Western United States. A reception in the garden will follow.
