This plaster bust depicting the communist leader Vladimir Lenin was mass-produced to decorate East German Communist party offices and official spaces. It was modified by protesters during the Monday demonstrations of 1989 in Leipzig, using spray paint only sold in the West. The garish colors seem to present a visual critique of the GDR government. However, since the bust was not destroyed, its message might have been a demand for reform rather than a complete rejection of the socialist ideal.
