Vaterländischer Verdienstordenin ("Patriotic Order of Merit") in bronze. The Vaterländischer Verdienstordenin was a national award that was granted annually in the DDR to a citizen that demonstrated outstanding merit. The award consists of two bronze pins in a red case. There were four tiers to the award, with bronze signifying the third class and lowest tier. The smaller of the pins consists of a fabric German flag with a bronze laurel underneath and a metal locking clasp on the back. The larger pin has the same features as the smaller pin except there is an additional clasp which extends from the laurel that holds a bronze medal. The medal bears the national emblem of the DDR, a hammer and a compass surrounded by a ring of rye. The medal has delicate ridges surrounding the national emblem and is in the shape of a decagram.
