Chinese Cultural Revolution banner with sun and flags referring to song "The East is Red". The sun refers to Mao Zedong, who was referred to as "the red sun in the hearts of the Chinese people." The "East is Red" is a revolutionary song that became the de-facto national anthem of the People's Republic of China during the 1960s. The melody was adapted from a Shaanxi folk song and hte lyrics were attributed to Li Youyuan. The lyrics heroicize Chairman Mao and played an important role in forwarding his personality cult.
