Chinese Cultural Revolution flag from the Red Rebel Red Guard group with Mao's portrait. The Red Guards were quasi-military student groups formed in 1966, immediately after Mao announced the start of the Cultural Revolution. Red Guard groups worked to route out black elements from society and often subjected their victims to struggle sessions. There were many different Red Guard groups formed in each city and the groups fought among one another for control over territory, leading to violent armed conflicts. Eventually in 1968, Mao recalled the Red Guards. Those who did not disband voluntarily were dealt with by the People's Liberation Army. Many students who were formerly Red Guards were then sent to work in the countryside alongside the peasants as part of the "Down to the Countryside" movement.
