Chinese Cultural Revolution banner with portrait of Chairman Mao, heart with the word "zhong" (loyalty) and sunflowers. Trimmed with ribbon and tassels. Sunflowers were an important element of Cultural Revolution iconography. Because Mao was referred to as the "red sun", the Chinese people were referred to as sunflowers. Loyalty to the Chairman was emphasized during the Cultural Revolution, and there was a specific "Loyalty Dance" dedicated to him. This dance was meant to demonstrate respect to Mao and was performed by Chinese citizens of all ages.
