On the exterior of the bowl, there is a quote from Mao's poem written in 1959, "qi lv, dao Shaoshan," which roughly means Seven Rhymes, Arrival in Shaoshan. The poem was written after Mao returned to his hometown Shaoshan in 1959 and praised the bravery of revolutionaries who "dare to make the sun and the moon shine in new skies." Also on the exterior of the bowl there is an illustration of five figures, two of which are soldiers, two students, and one farmer, each holding a "Selected Works by Mao" and dressed in their respective uniforms and attires.
