"Everything in the Name..."

Date Made: 1990
Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 60 cm x 90 cm; 23 5/8 in x 35 7/16 in

The artwork portrays a man wearing a horse bridle, with his closed mouth looking uncomfortable with the bit inside. Painted in shades of black and brown, the man’s expressive eyes under the blinders are sad and resigned. The Russian text below this face reads, “Any sort of violence, even violence that is supposedly towards the greater good, towards one’s will and consciousness is impermissible.” This view evokes the oppression of Stalin’s Great Purges, when citizens were forced to surrender their will to the government out of fear of the harsh repurcussions that dissent would bring.
