This painting of Russian currency, the ruble, is a play on the American dollar. Tanel titles this painting "Comrade, Trust," a play on "In God We Trust," the words featured on the dollar bill. As capitalism is introduced to the Russian Federation, there is skepticism towards how successful it will be in a country that has survived decades of Communism. The artist is telling his audience to trust in capitalism. The number one (1) is painted to look like a barcode, again a symbol of capitalism and mass consumption. The technique used to produce this painting makes it the word “Ruble” three dimensional, as if it were constructed possibly with cardboard.
