Alive and Kicking!

Date Made: 1991
Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 60 cm x 90 cm; 23 5/8 in x 35 7/16 in

A cracked and scratched profile bust of Stalin smoking a pipe is being carried by faceless men in hats. The pipe smoke spells out the Russian acronym “GKChP,” which stands for the State Committee on the State of Emergency, the group of eight men that attempted to oust Gorbachev from power in the failed coup of 1991. The title across the top of the painting , “Alive and kicking!” refers to the inanimate Stalin monument; although clearly made of stone, the bust is still able to smoke a pipe. The life-like qualities of the monument of a leader long dead brings up an association between the eight men who conspired against Gorbachev and Stalin returning to the political scene, highlighting the lingering presence of Stalin and his ideas in the Russian political environment.
