The Kremlin Has Erupted
Date Made: 1991
Country: Soviet Union

In the distance, the Kremlin in Moscow has erupted in a volcano-like manner, with two red-starred pinnacles exploding into pieces in the air. The Spasskaya Tower has the top blown off with a lava-like substance pouring out, the red lava turning into white, blue, and red stripes mimicking the Russian flag as it appears to pour into the landscape. The year of the painting, 1991, was a turbulent year in Russian politics as the country struggled to unify in the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The eruption of the Russian flag out of the Moscow Kremlin, formerly the seat of the Communist Party, hints at the power of the singular Russian state that had been boiling underground for years finally coming out into the open.
