This artwork portrays three sets of hands: the top hands have the thumb wrapped under the index finger, the middle hands show all fingers spread out, and the third are mid-handshake. The top gesture is known in Russia as the fig sign, and is a mildly obscene and sexual gesture used in Slavic countries. The handshake reveals the sleeves of each hand, the right hand wearing a red sleeve with a white emblazoned hammer and sickle, and the left hand wearing an American flag pattern on its sleeve, symbolizing American-Soviet friendship.
