Method: tempera
Measurements: 90 cm x 60 cm; 35 7/16 in x 23 5/8 in

The painting depicts two separate land masses, “Mother Armenia” and “Artsakh,” colored red, blue, and yellow of the Armenian flag and separated by a line of barbed wire. In the bottom righthand corner of the work is the word “Democracy.” Artsakh refers to the historic region controlled by the Kingdom of Armenia from 189 BC - 387 AD whose landmass currently overlaps with the territory of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Nagorno-Karabakh is a highly contested geographical region in Azerbaijan whose population is majority Armenian descent. In 1923 Stalin placed the entire region under Azerbaijani control, and in 1991 the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (or the NK-Autonamous Oblast) was officially established. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is not recognized internationally as a part of Armenia, although its inhabitants consider themselves to be Armenian.
