The Centaur

Country: Soviet Union
Measurements: 60 cm x 90 cm; 23 5/8 in x 35 7/16 in
This artwork shows two faceless men, connected by the body of a horse, arm wrestling. This modern Russian double-headed Centaur portrays two men, presumably Gorbachev and Yeltsin, in an epic battle for the control of the Soviet Union. Beneath the centaur’s feet are traditional Communist Party slogans written over smeared streaks of paint, the contrasting bands of color continue up around the centaur importing a sense of motion and confusion.
