Country: Soviet Union

Measurements: 90 cm x 60 cm; 35 7/16 in x 23 5/8 in

An image of a punk rock youth wearing a leather vest, studded leather cuffs, and a crucifix necklace stares straight at the viewer. The title of the work, “Welcome, young tribe,” is taken from a 1835 Alexander Pushkin poem entitled “I have visited again,” where he muses on life, death, and the connection between humans and nature. Surrounding the youth are the phrases, “Rock against war,” “Rock against drug addicts,” Rock against AIDS,” “Rock for democracy,” and “Green rock.” The poster welcomes a new generation of more liberal, politically-active youth to Russian culture; a new “tribe” of people that are passionate about the subsequent civil rights causes that sprang out of the original environmental activism of the 1990s.
