The painting shows an imaginary figure, half-dragon and half-tank, labelled “GKChP” flying through a bright yellow sky above the barely visable three star-topped towers of the Kremlin and in the far right bottom edge the flag atop a dome on a Kremlin building. The machine creature, with blood on its talons and blood on the tires of the tank, has the outline of a hammer and sickle on its rear end. GKChP is the acronym for the State Committee on the State of Emergency, the group of hardline Communists that attempted to oust Gorbachev from power in a failed coup in August 1991. Although the coup was relatively bloodless during its climax outside of the Russian parliament building on August 19th, when the Soviet tanks refused to fire on the citizens barricading the White House from attack, two days later there were several civilian causualties during a standoff nearby.
