The mismatched monument of Lenin depicted here is simultaneously being built and destroyed. These two activities reflect the mixed attitudes people held of Lenin during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some tried to defame his historical significance; others still revered him and tried to restore his importance. The multiple views about Lenin speak further about the population’s ambivalent perspectives toward the future of the Soviet Union. By demolishing and reconstructing Lenin, the symbolic founder of the Soviet Union, the workers represent both the opposition to and the support of the Soviet Union.
