Lenin’s Death Bed portrays the communist leader Vladimir Lenin in the process of passing away. His bare, frail, and scarred body rests horizontally, referencing depictions of Christ’s dying body in early European art. Lenin died on January 21st, 1924 from a stroke. The artwork could also be interpreted as allegorical, representing the different varieties of Soviet Communism: Leninism, Stalinism, and Gorbachev’s Glasnost and Perestroika. Embodying these diverse political policies, Stalin and Gorbachev, with the characteristic birthmark on his forehead, are paying their last respects to Lenin. The artwork was created in 1991, when the Soviet Union was falling apart.
