Bill Aron, Lev Blitshtein, Administrator in meatpacking plant, 1981, Moscow. Portrait of a seated man holding a cigarette. This image is one of Bill Aron’s portraits of Refuseniks, or Jews whose applications for exit visas were denied by the Soviet Union. Lev Blitshtein, the former head of the Meatpackers Union, first applied for his exit visa in 1974. Though officially his application was denied because he knew how much meat was used to make sausage, Blitshtein attributed his denial to knowing “how little meat there is in the Soviet Union.”
