Bill Aron, Retired Colonel Lev Ovischer, 1981, Moscow. Portrait of a seated man holding medals from his service in the Second World War. This image is one of Bill Aron’s portraits of Refuseniks, or Jews whose applications for exit visas were denied by the Soviet Union. Lev Ovischer, served as the photographer’s guide in Minsk, first applied for his exit visa in 1972. He was denied on the grounds that, as a former pilot, he had exposure to state secrets, despite having been retired for sixteen years.
