This photograph of the entrance of the Saint Nicholas Church of the Monastery “Mihai Voda” depicts a fresco of the dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu standing side by side with the patriarch Nicodim, head of the Romanian Orthodox Church from 1939 to1948. From 1940 to 1944, under Antonescu’s rule, Romania allied itself with Nazi Germany which led to the death of between 280,00 and 380,000 Jews.
