Displaced 54 yards on 14 June 1984, this early eighteenth-century church, weighing 2,315 tons, was the first to be moved on rails laid at an oblique angle to the church’s axis. The transport lasted 18 hours. The heavy golden interior contrasts with the blandness of its new surroundings. In this photograph, it is partially obscured by trees and other signs of city life, such as benches and a trashcan.
