Soviet Hippie Collection
The Soviet Hippie Collection brings together materials from former hippies across the Soviet Union, primarily from the 1960s and 1970s. The collection includes documents, photographs, artwork, textiles, compact discs, and journals.
The materials show how hippies collaborated with underground artists on anti-establishment exhibitions, took part in ecumenical and Orthodox reform movements, and at times engaged in political dissent. Though they were outliers within the Soviet system, hippies reflect broader trends that shaped the latter half of the Cold War — including the strains that contributed to the Soviet collapse and the society that emerged after it.
The cataloging and digitization of this collection was made possible by the support of Arcadia – a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.
