Dinner Party Politics: Food Culture in the Eastern Bloc

April 9, 2017 to July 21, 2017
The Wende Museum at Buckingham Parkway, Culver City, California

Food is a powerful medium that can carry both personal and political meaning. We have strong emotional connections to the things we eat, which are tied to memory, heritage, and tradition. Food also plays a part in constructing national identities and expressing societal values. Through a survey of fine art, posters, menus, and films, Dinner Party Politics: Food Culture in the Eastern Bloc examines the ideological goals, gender roles, and individual desires expressed by the production and consumption of food in socialist countries during the Cold War.
