USSR in Construction

Throughout the Cold War, both communist and non-communist countries produced propaganda magazines aimed at international audiences. One of the most notable was USSR in Construction, an oversized, visually striking magazine published from 1930 to 1941, with a final issue in 1949. Each issue featured color printing, photography, layered photo montages, dramatic compositions, and multi-page foldouts. Founded by writer Maxim Gorky, the magazine drew on some of the leading writers, photographers, and artists of the era.

The magazine covered locations across the Soviet Union and a wide range of topics — collective farming, heavy industry, transportation, gender equality, education, and public health. Published in Russian, French, English, German, and later Spanish, it was designed to project a positive image of the USSR: one of rapid modernization, national unity, and socialist progress.
